The "Invisible Weight": Why We Need to Talk About the Hard Stuff
Steady, guys. Darren here.
I’ve been getting some heavy messages lately. A few of you have opened up about feeling completely overwhelmed—by the grind, by the job market, or by the crushing pressure to "make it" in Singapore before you hit 30.
I usually talk about BTOs, career pivots, and efficiency hacks. But none of that matters if your mental health is in the red. We’ve seen a concerning rise in reports regarding "unnatural deaths" in our community recently. When we see these headlines, it’s a brutal reminder that behind every "pioneer" hustle and every "optimization" strategy, there is a human being who might be hurting.
Breaking the "Checkpoint" Barrier
In Singapore, we love our checkpoints. We have them for our career milestones, our housing goals, our fitness, and our savings. We are so focused on hitting the next Checkpoint that we often forget to check in on the Human behind the goals.
The "Checkpoint" Trap: We live in a society that measures success by a constant, ticking clock. If you miss a promotion, if you don't get your BTO on time, or if your career gap is longer than expected—it feels like you've failed the checkpoint. But here’s the truth: A missed checkpoint is not a failed life. It is just a detour.
The "Unnatural" Silence: When people don't talk about their struggles, they often feel like they are suffering in isolation. They look at others' "highlight reels" on social media and think, "Everyone else is winning, why am I struggling?" That gap—between the public persona and the private pain—is where the danger lies.
Redefining "Success"
If you feel like you are at a breaking point, please hear this: The "efficiency" of your life is not measured by how fast you get to the next goal. It’s measured by your ability to sustain your well-being while you work toward those goals.
Lower the Stakes: If you feel like your life’s value is tied to your bank account, your job title, or your housing status—take a step back. Those are external metrics. They do not define your internal worth.
The Power of a Pivot: If you are at a "checkpoint" that feels impossible to reach, change the checkpoint. You don't have to quit; you just have to redefine what "progress" looks like for you right now.
Use Your Support Network: There is zero "inefficiency" in asking for help. In fact, it is the most mature, high-level decision you can make. If you aren't sure where to start, reach out to the helplines above. They are literally built to help you navigate the "unnatural" weight that life can sometimes drop on you.
The Verdict?
I’m Darren, and I’m here to talk about how to optimize your life—but your life must exist before it can be optimized. If you’re struggling, please don't try to "fix" it alone. You don't have to hit every checkpoint on time. You just have to be here for the next one.
If you’re feeling the weight today, please reach out to someone—a friend, a family member, or one of the professionals at the helplines listed above. There is no shame in pausing.

And for those of you feeling okay—check in on your friends. Sometimes, the person who looks like they have it all together is the one who needs the most support.
